Rights groups are calling on the United Nations to deny Egypt a leading role in setting its human rights agenda. This is related to the office of the UN Special Rapporteur responsible for the promotion and protection of human rights and fundamental freedom.
Its mandate is up for renewal and Egypt is reportedly in talks to take a leading role in drafting the resolution.
Rights groups are worried that Cairo will water down the UN Special Rapporteur’s mandate to shield itself from scrutiny
Egypt was recently denounced by the UN Special Rapporteur for severe reprisals against people who spoke to another visiting UN expert.
And its government has been accused of numerous rights violations amid a crackdown on dissent – including enforced disappearances and torture.
Matt Pollard is a Senior Legal Adviser and UN representative for the International Commission of Jurists, talks to Al Jazeera about the developments.
