Israeli troops have killed seven Palestinians – including a Hamas military commander in what appears to be a covert Israeli operation gone wrong in Khan Younis, in southern Gaza.
Both Hamas and Israel claim that the assassination of the Hamas commander was not the purpose of the operation – according to Hamas, the commandos were stopped at a checkpoint and a gun battle ensued.
An Israeli officer was also killed and another was wounded.
The incident could damage a ceasefire in place that had seen some improvements in Gaza, including more fuel allowed into Gaza, as well as Qatar-based funds to pay Palestinian civil servants.
