The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) are struggling to take over the last ISIL-held area of Syria. The Kurdish-led group has slowed down its offensive after ISIL resorted to using civilians as human shields.
Many ISIL fighters have surrendered, but the battle could take longer than expected as the group is known to put up a fierce resistance.
Joshua Landis, the director of the Center for Middle East Studies at the University of Oklahoma, speaks to Al Jazeera about the SDF’s offensive to take over ISIL’s last pocket of territory in Syria.
