🇺🇸 Fast food, Fat profits: Obesity in America | Fault Lines

Obesity in America has reached a crisis point. Two out of every three Americans are overweight, one out of every three is obese. One in three are expected to have diabetes by 2050.

Minorities have been even more profoundly affected. African-Americans have a 50 per cent higher prevalence of obesity and Hispanics 25 per cent higher when compared with whites.

How did the situation get so out of hand?

On this week’s episode of Fault Lines, Josh Rushing explores the world of cheap food for Americans living at the margins.

What opportunities do people have to eat healthy? Who is responsible for food deserts and processed food in American schools?

Fault Lines finds food revolutions taking place and speaks with the people that are fighting back.

People featured in this film: Marion Nestle, Marlene Schwartz, John Bode, Nelson Eusebio, J. Justin Wilson, Dr. Olajide Williams, Lauren Von Der Pool, Julie Paradis, Cathal Armstrong, Ed Bruske,

  1. People are programmed to drink soda. I visit this restaurant on a regular basis. Every time I order water with my meal this one particular waitress gives me this sour look, like I am cheating myself just asking for water. No, I am rewarding myself madam.

  2. Healthy eating is not that expensive, if you don't always shop in Whole Foods, of course.

  3. McDoubles are one dollar??? Where?

  4. Most Americans are abhorrently ignorant.

  5. I don’t care what you eat…Workout and drink water!

  6. chemicals in school meals helps dumb them down. those chemicals cause brain damage

  7. Getting surgery to stop over eating is not a fast food issue

  8. the fast food may be cheaper, but all the health costs that come with too much of it are way more expensive. Also, tons of healthy foods can taste amazing. A nice lentil curry with some vegetables is bomb (and cheap too if you buy in bulk). Many unhealthy foods can be healthified, like ice cream and pizza, but you need to do it yourself

  9. Al Jazeera is from Qatar. Qatar is actually a fatter nation than the States. Not that it isn't a problem in both places, but I do wonder if Al Jazeera has also reported on the depth of this problem in Qatar (I did look up Qatar obesity and found some very short two minute features) but yeah I lived in Qatar for three years and it's a MEGA health concern there. I would love to watch a feature on that if AJ has produced one. Thanks!

  10. Fasting costs nothing… stop teaching people they have to eat all the time…

  11. You can make your food budget cheap but you must pick 2 of the following:

1.) Food that’s ‘convenient’ (quick to make at home or get at a restaurant)
2.) Food that’s healthy for you
    3.) Food that tastes good

I choose health and taste to make my food budget cheap BUT I slave away in the kitchen at least 3-5 times a week. I have left overs the rest of the time or add to my food budget so I can pick all 3 (health, tastes, convenience)!!!

  12. Looking at all that food they their eating it is making me sick.

  13. Its not expensive, just eat fast food and be careful what you buy. You can do 2 lettuce wrap hamburgers without fries and diet coke. It is much much healthier than one normal hamburger with fries and coke

  14. I actually saved money going healthy. MONEY ISNT THE ISSUE. EDUCATION IS. literally. Planning is. Simplicity is. Forming good habits and keeping consistent is key

  15. This was uploaded roughly 8 years ago, how are we doing today?

  16. People and their excuses, it’s always someone else that’s at fault.

  17. It’s cheaper to eat healthy. What kind of bullshit is this?

  18. "Its harder and harder to make good food choices."

    Bullshit.

For practically no money you could even mail order from Amazon healthy food if you are so lazy or, supposedly, don't have access to healthy foods.

Staples – beans, rice, oats are dirt cheap and amazon has them.

You can mail order potatoes, veggies, and fruits from the internet as well…if you are so lazy or supposedly you live in a food desert.

  19. Shouldn't have kids and poverty! It's okay to eat fast food and sugar just in moderation. I eat healthy on the weekdays and I'll treat myself to a chocolate on Friday & Saturday

  20. Fast food is not cheap !!!
