You know what I love about nighttime? Sleeping. And the thing about an involved nighttime skin-care routine is that it stands between me and the sleeping. So I keep it simple: wash face, apply retinol product, put head on pillow. But recently, in my 42nd year, I started to feel like I was missing something. And that something was moisture. The retinol was still doing its job — keeping lines and discoloration in check — but now I was waking up to skin that felt a little tight, definitely not replenished.
So I started experimenting with one (only one!) extra step and layering a moisturizer on top of my retinol. I tried serums, creams, oils… and after a few weeks, the one I kept coming back to was Acure Seriously Soothing Blue Tansy Night Oil. There are 10 different oils packed into each one-ounce bottle — in order of concentration: sweet almond, jojoba, castor, argan, rose flower, grape seed, kukui nut, blue tansy flower, yarrow, and matricaria flower. And that may sound like a greasy mess but it is in fact delightfully light. I pump three to four drops into one palm, pat my hands together and then press them into my skin. The oil has a light blue tint, courtesy of the blue tansy oil, and a sweet, herby scent. Some face oils make me physically recoil with their overwhelming fragrance; this one has a scent that actually makes my body relax. I find it so delightful, in fact, that I’ve upped my dose to five or six drops — that’s enough to also rub into my cuticles and even over the ends of my hair, quickly, before the head on pillow part of the evening.
Many of the oils in this cocktail — sweet almond, jojoba, the namesake blue tansy (which is a relative of chamomile) — have anti-inflammatory properties, which makes this formula a brilliant one to layer over potentially irritating retinols. (A key word here, though, is over; never apply an oil before another moisturizer or treatment product — nothing you put on top of it will penetrate.) It’s also just a great all-around choice for anyone with sensitive skin or unexpected flare-ups of irritation. (In addition to the many soothing ingredients there also several things it does not contain: parabens, sulfates, phthalates, mineral oil, petrolatum, or silicone.) And I actually love the texture and scent so much that I no longer relegate it to only night duty. After putting on a light antioxidant serum and a sheer sunscreen in the morning, I press a little of this oil onto my skin to smooth any dry or scaly patches before I apply my makeup. (An involved morning routine clearly doesn’t bother me — I still have at least 12 hours ahead before I can reasonably go to sleep.)
