Earlier this month, Penélope Cruz joined fashion’s familiar faces on the runway to mark the legacy of Karl Lagerfeld at the Chanel autumn/winter 2019 show. Is it any wonder then that she chose a Chanel Haute Couture gown for her latest red carpet appearance? Celebrating her newest film Pain & Glory the actor showcased the white, cap sleeved dress – with an embellished bodice – in Madrid on March 13.
Written and directed by Pedro Almodóvar, Pain & Glory (Dolor y Gloria in Spanish) tells the story of Salvador Mallo (played by Antonio Banderas) who starts to reflect on the choices he’s made in his life after things go south. Cruz – who’s starred in Vicky Cristina Barcelona and Vanilla Sky – plays the character of Jacinta in the Spanish psychodrama.
Recently, Cruz has spoken about the changes she’s encountered within the film industry since the #MeToo movement sparked in 2017. “I think the fact that all these things came into the light changed a lot of things,” Cruz said at the Variety Studio presented by AT&T at the Toronto Film Festival in 2018. “I noticed differences, for example, in the kind of questions we get asked in interviews. Before you would be in a press conference, and only the women would be asked very rude questions or superficial questions. People are more careful now. It’s symbolic, but it reflects people are being aware of treating each other with more respect.”
Pain & Glory hits UK cinemas on 23 August. Watch the trailer in full below:
