Couture’s fantasy gowns never fail to clean up in the dreamiest bridalwear category. With the celebrated matrimonial closing-look slot, designers have unleashed some of fashion’s most memorable catwalk moments. Take Kate Moss’s turn as the Versace Atelier Couture bride for the house’s AW95 show. The dress? A crystal-encrusted mini shift paired with hoop earrings, floor length veil and vertiginous boots. Who, also, could forget Linda Evangelista as the couture bride for Chanel’s autumn 2003 show: a moodboard-worthy look for anyone who’s ever dreamt of getting married in a decorative lace cap.
Other equally show-stopping moments have taken a more pared-back, but no less dramatic, approach. At Valentino’s spring 2013 couture show, for example, the regal simplicity of a high-neck cape dress (worn by Australian model Julia Nobis) ruled the day.
On the ready-to-wear runways, the all-white petticoat dresses hewn by London-based designer Simone Rocha are the stuff of modern fairy tales, while Anthony Vaccarello’s vampish Yves Saint Laurent minidress (SS18) continues to inspire a more playful approach.
