It would be nearly impossible to count the number of times actors have worn wigs for a movie role. Whether they’re used as a subtle way to give someone longer or shorter hair or they serve as the dramatic focus of a look, fake hair (or someone else’s real hair) has long be plopped atop the head of many a thespian. The same probably can’t be said about actors’ armpits, however, but Cara Delevingne just made it abundantly clear that underarm merkins are totally a thing.
Even if you follow Delevingne on Instagram, you might not have noticed her temporarily fuzzy armpits, as she tucked them away in the second slide of two of her posts on Thursday. But there, in photos promoting her new movie with Elisabeth Moss, Her Smell, Delevingne is proudly showing off her remarkably natural-looking underarm hair. And considering how body-positive the model is known to be, we’re sure she would have grown it herself if she could, but that ship sailed at the dermatologist’s office a long time ago.
“I never thought I would need armpit hair again after getting laser… I was wrong,” she wrote in the caption of the first post, in which the second slide shows her wearing a black sports bra, her arms casually lifted above her head to reveal light-brown pelts. “Introducing ARMPIT WIGS!” Delevingne then asked her followers for their thoughts — and the reactions were predictably mixed.
A few folks with antiquated ideas about body hair posted comments like “disgusting” or various emojis expressing disapproval, but plenty of fans were fully on board with the look. “Mullet + pit hair is my 2019 energy,” one commenter wrote, while another said, “Damn you’re beautiful!” Others had words for the hair haters, like one fan who commented, “Why the fuck are there vomit faces? Non of y’all idiots have hair on you body? Why is growing out ones natural body hair gross again?!”
Delevingne probably knew she’d get some criticism when she asked for opinions, but she also probably didn’t actually care about any of that negativity. After all, the second slide of the second post she shared shows her pulling down her short sleeve to seemingly smell the faux armpit hair.
If you’re mature enough to handle the concept of someone feminine having armpit hair, you can catch Her Smell in theaters now.
