Finn Wolfhard‘s unflinching ability to deliver a sneering, hilariously inappropriate one-liner sets him apart as an actor more than anything. But not far behind that are his dark and unmistakable curls that coil in every possible direction around his face. It’s a haircut we love on him, but the 16-year-old actor known for Stranger Things and the It franchise has pivoted (hard) with a haircut that’s left him nearly unrecognizable. On October 21, he revealed a straight and shaggy haircut to his 18 million followers, who are living, dying, and then coming back to life again over the surprising new look.
The snapshot of the mullet-like style has rapidly earned tens of thousands of glowing comments and more than 2.6 million likes. “That mullet a chefs kiss,” reads one of the top comments on the post. “Is it just me or is he transforming into fucking Freddie Mercury,” says one of the many commenters who are likening him to rock icons of the ’70s. And that was likely Wolfhard’s goal — he is the front man of an indie rock band, Calpurnia, when he’s not acting, after all.
But with any actor’s drastic haircut comes the same important question: Is this an honest-to-God haircut or an elaborate wig they’re wearing for a role? Wolfhard’s Instagram caption reads, “Not gonna lie my hair is like that right now,” which we’re going to take as confirmation that he really did cut and straighten his hair. And who could blame him? At the risk of sounding cliché, the shag is in right now. Kesha, Anne Hathaway, and Natasha Lyonne (among plenty of others,) have popularized the look in recent months. Truly, it’s about time more men caught on.
