Kaia Gerber might have only been modelling for a handful of years, but her success in the industry almost has her feeling like a veteran. At least when it comes to her work with Marc Jacobs. Returning as the face of Daisy’s new Daisy Love Eau de Sweet campaign, Kaia told Miss Vogue that this relationship has been all the more special for enduring throughout her formative years.
“This is the longest I’ve ever worked with a brand and the best thing about the journey is that I’ve been able to grow up alongside the people,” she added. “There’s such a strong connection for me with Daisy Marc Jacobs.”
Beginning at 14 and now extending into her almost-18th year, not much has changed about her approach to her work with the brand but her appreciation of just how much goes into each image and project has altered. “I was only 14 when I started,” she explained. “I have such a new appreciation for all the hardwork and creativity that goes into making this art.”
“I don’t feel nervous and I never really did when it came to modelling,” Kaia adds about breaking into the industry so young. “I definitely feel more confident, especially being around the whole team at Daisy Marc Jacobs because we have such a strong relationship that has built up over the campaigns.
“What I love about shooting with [photographer] Alasdair McLellan and the whole team is that I never feel like I have to pretend to be anyone. They create such a kind and loving atmosphere that I feel comfortable to be myself… which I think, you know, goes along with the brand as well.”
The Kaia you see in the campaign imagery isn’t far from her real self. You see her hanging with pals on Malibu beaches just as she does here, alongside “genuine friends”, Aube Jolicoeur and Faith Lynch. “I think as long as you’re confident your true self will come through in pictures.”
Feeling confident on set for Kaia comes down to being surrounded by those that are able to make far-flung destinations as second nature as the ones she grown up in. “I feel most at home with people I love and the people I feel most comfortable around. This is a job that requires a lot of travelling and different environments. I think it’s about being around people that you care about and who care about you.”
And it’s clear that she finds this mood on the Marc Jacobs sets, with memories made for a life time. “I really associate fragrance with memories and especially with Daisy. I have a lot of beautiful memories that I [remember] every time I wear . What is an amazing thing about fragrance is that it can bring you back to a certain time, or place or feeling and Daisy really does that for me which is why I love to work with them.”
If only all of our work environments smelled so sweet.
