With over 30 years experience in the fashion and beauty industry, Val Garland is highly regarded as one of the best make-up artists of our generation. From her signature hyper-real perfected skin treatment to all-out face-painting, she is known for her versatility and creative genius. And for the past two years she has been putting that creativity into a book, Validated, that launches today.
More than just a coffee table accessory, there’s a story to be told in its pages: “Committing to trying to become a successful make-up artist isn’t easy. I set out to do it with pure determination and absolute concrete belief that this was what I wanted to do – but that if it didn’t work out, something better would happen. So I wanted this book to be warts and all, and show what [that journey] is,” Garland explained.
Her vision of beauty is one that we can all relate to. “Doing make-up I am very inspired by the canvas of each face and what actually is beautiful. Everybody’s opinion of what is beautiful is different, and I like to treat all my women or men as equal paintings in front of me. This is a book of images that I loved doing and that I felt inspired by. It’s all about the make-up.”
Accordingly, Validated is an anthology of her editorial work from within the pages of British Vogue and elsewhere, as well as pictures from backstage and behind the scenes, with accompanying narrative throughout. Lifting the lid on what it’s like to be a make-up artist, it’s a book that every make-up aficionado will want in their collection. “I just wanted this book to be about beautiful images and I hope that everyone can find something that tickles their fancy.”
