To say that Lady Gaga’s had one helluva year so far would be putting it lightly. The A Star Is Born lead made major waves at every award show this season, and naturally, tonight’s 2019 Grammys was no exception. In addition to taking home a whopping three wins, her beauty looks stole the show, too. That’s right: Mother Monster debuted not one, but two show-stopping makeup and hair moments, starting off with an unexpectedly understated red carpet look, and later in the night, unveiling crystal-studded eyeliner on stage during her standout performance of Shallow.
Unlike both of her bold ensembles at the SAGs and Golden Globes, Gaga and her glam squad went for a more minimal red carpet look consisting of loose, undone waves and subtly smoky eye makeup. Her longtime makeup artist and friend, Sarah Tanno, even shared several Grammys looks from years past on her Instagram Stories, and this one is notably the most low-key hair and makeup she’s debuted to date. That being said, it was executed so beautifully, and couldn’t have been more perfect for the star’s big night.
For her makeup, Tanno smoked out the singer’s lower lashline with a creamy black kohl liner by Marc Jacobs Beauty, leaving the lids and upper lashline mostly untouched aside from a smidge of dark shadow in the shade Catwalks. Tanno explained that they wanted the eye makeup to look as if she had “put it on yesterday.” She even skipped mascara to add to the slightly undone feel. As for the rest of her beat, Tanno applied a hint of bronzer to chisel out the star’s already-defined cheekbones and topped the whole look off with the Marc Jacobs Beauty Enamored Hydrating Lip Gloss Stick in Sugar Sugar for a glossy champagne-nude finish.
For her second look of the night, Tanno changed the game completely and gave Gaga an ultra-glamorous, glitter eyeliner look that paired perfectly with the iconic bejeweled catsuit she wore during her Grammys performance.
As for her hair, Frederic Aspiras kept things fairly natural with loose, textured waves inspired by Gaga’s character Ally from A Star Is Born. “We [went] for a more lived-in look with lots of texture while keeping the hair healthy and soft,” Aspiras wrote on Instagram, where he gave an in-depth breakdown of the hair look. For this, he created two types of waves to give it a “morning after” vibe.
“I used two different irons and [first] sprayed a light mist of the Joico Defy Damage ProSeries to protect her hair,” he explained. “I used the GHD Platinum Plus to create wide flat ‘S’ waves throughout, [followed by] the GHD Soft Curl Iron to ‘curl and slide’ curls throughout hair and give it a more natural, lived-in look,” he added. After using GHD’s blow-dryer on a cold shot low setting to help “move and open up waves while closing the cuticle”, Aspiras finished with a few spritzes of the Joico Body Shake Texturizing Finisher and the brand’s Blonde Life Brilliant Glow Brightening Oil all over hair.
Needless to say, it was another monumental night for the multi-hyphenate singer-songwriter, and we couldn’t be happier for her. Her flawless hair and makeup only made the night that much better.
