Now is the Time to Book Thanksgiving and Christmas Flights

If you’re planning on traveling this holiday season, now might be the right time to start looking at those plane tickets.

Travel + Leisure spoke to a number of experts on the topic and found a general consensus that now is the right time to start shopping. According to Scott Keyes from Scott’s Cheap Flights the correct time to actually book those tickets was this summer, but now that we’re rolling into fall you should definitely start booking now.

He says that once you get within three or four months of the holidays it’s highly unlikely that you’ll see a drop in prices. In fact, you’re more likely to see those prices start to increase going forward.

It’s a sentiment echoed by Scott Mayerowitz, the executive director of The Points Guy who says that you absolutely want to book your tickets at least six weeks in advance, ideally further out.

Even if there’s a small chance that the flight you want will decrease in price between now and a few weeks from now, the number of seats available on that plane will almost certainly go down.

If you’re traveling with family members, then buying now will give you more options when it comes to seats, so you can hopefully all sit together. Come November those flights will be considerably more expensive, and you might be stuck with three middles seats spread out across the plane rather than a row together.

Their advice echoes what we’re heard in previous years. In general, booking those flights before October 15th is what most travel booking sites and experts recommend.

When it comes to actually booking those flights you may also want to look at the calendar view for the airline of your choice and see how fares vary from day to day. Sometimes the difference between flying on a Sunday and a Monday can be literally hundreds of dollars. If you have relatively flexible travel plans then it pays to see what your options are.

And when it doubt, book that Christmas flight before your Thanksgiving one. Christmas flights are notoriously expensive and will rise in price a lot faster than their December counterparts.
