She was formally welcomed into the LVMH fold with the launch of the Fenty Maison back in May, but Rihanna still likes to champion lesser-known labels. The pop megastar turned fashion and beauty mogul chose a sweater dress by Budapest-based Nanushka for a dinner date with her mother in Santa Monica on Tuesday.
RiRi’s knitted dress, which she wore with a woven clutch, strappy sandals and a red lip, was slit to the thigh on either side, giving it a summery feel in spite of the snug fabric. Perfect to ward off any hint of a breeze on a late August eve in California, but surely even better for clinging on to the last days of bare leg season here in Britain.
Earlier this month the superstar stole the show at Crop Over Festival in her native Barbados wearing an explosion of tulle and feathers in Barbie pink by rising Dutch designer David LaPort. The 2017 Woolmark Prize winner, who previously dressed Solange for the 2016 Met Gala, enjoyed another major moment when Rihanna’s stylist, Jahleel Weaver, tapped him up for her festival look.
“I assume she has found the dress via my social channels,” LaPort told Vogue over the phone at the time, after pictures of her in his made-to-measure feathers flooded the internet. “Jahleel asked especially for the pink feathers, so five co-workers and I spent some nights making it for her – it was a no-brainer!”
LaPort’s delight was no surprise, we all know an endorsement from Rihanna makes people sit up and pay attention – whether it’s an emerging brand or a Sainsbury’s Bag for Life.
