This past summer, jelly nails were all the rage, with nail artists, influencers, and celebs alike all showing off the early 2000s-inspired style. Now though, fall is in full swing and a new trend is here: sea glass nails. Similar yet different, they’re like jelly nails’ sophisticated older sister that everyone wants to hang out with.
The main difference between jelly and sea glass nails is the finish. While jelly nails are known for being fairly shiny, sea glass nails are typically topped off with a coat of clear matte polish (though there are some with a subtle sheen to them, too). That being said, you can truly customize this trend and make it whatever you want — that’s what makes nail art so fun, after all. For instance, some iterations on Instagram feature glitter for a festive vibe, while other styles are rainbow or have chunky flecks of sparkle underneath the matte topcoat.
While tons of people are trying out the sea glass nail trend, Refinery29 pointed out that nail expert Jessica Washick was one of the first pros to jump on the new trend. She told the publication, “I was reminiscing about how fun the jelly-nail craze was [and] I wondered how that aesthetic could translate into the colder months, and the vision of opaque sea glass came to mind.”
It seems Washick isn’t the one who had this vision, though. Countless nail art influencers on Instagram have experimented with their own versions of the beachy style, and all of them can be easily re-created at home. There are even amazing press-on options you can try, too. Interested in trying out the look for yourself? Get inspired by the looks below.
